Unforeseen Joy: My Macramé Workshop Experience at 'A Hundred Hands', Festival of Handmade

I never expected a macramé workshop would mean so much to participants and bring me so much joy. It was not just kids who were attracted to the workshop, but adults too. This joy and the seamless flow of creativity were possible only because of the opportunity provided by 'A Hundred Hands'. Let me share a few instances with you.

While I was busy conducting the workshop, a little girl came by and stood beside me. I said hi, and she responded. She said, "I came here yesterday too for the workshop, and I have come here again for it." In a while, she brought her mom too and told me she wants to do another piece with me. While we were knotting her piece, her mom narrated that last night she was looking at the picture we clicked together and kept saying "how creative, how creative," and was eager to come back again! I wouldn't have dreamt of getting so much love in my wildest dreams!

I had a group of three ladies who walked in during a sunny afternoon, and all three wanted to try out making our curtain tie pattern. They heartily chit-chatted, laughed, and thoroughly enjoyed setting a complete vibe of their own. I had a good time in their presence. By the way, one of them was a CA, who somehow believed that creative things are not for her as she struggled to knot.

My youngest participant so far is a 4-year-old, who patiently sat and did the knotting with his cousin. I was so impressed by his focus. He told me that he is being homeschooled by his dad.

I also had a baker who came by to try her hands at knotting. She was so pleased that she went back home and wrote me a thank you note on how I helped her check one of her bucket list items, as she had been meaning to learn macramé for a long time now.

I also had friends who came to spend quality time learning something new together.

A little one studying in first standard, came along with his friends and promptly learned the knotting technique. He was so happy with it that he told his mom that he wants to take up classes with me. His mom messaged me on Instagram asking me to take classes for him as he generally doesn't seem to like people easily, but he seemed to have really liked me. It was a huge complement. My heart was full reading her messages.

I also got to teach a CA aspirant who made a curtain tie with me and bought one in the same color. She went back home and promptly sent me pictures of it adorning her curtains. She too is eager to attend workshops once again in the future with me.

These stories are just a glimpse of the diverse participants I had the privilege of teaching, in the 5 days event. The workshop while meeting its purpose of teaching macramé, became a platform for connection, inspiration, and unexpected moments of joy. As I reflect on the smiles, laughter, and shared accomplishments, I am reminded of the profound impact of fostering creativity and building a sense of community.
